Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer exceptional students an academic challenge and the chance to earn college credit. Near the end of the AP course, students take a three-hour exam covering the entire year. This exam is administered and graded by the College Board. If the AP exam is completed successfully, the student can be spared the cost of taking that course in college. A score of 3 or above is accepted in all Minnesota state universities. A score of 4 or 5 assures credit in almost all schools and all subjects. The three to five college credits earned per AP course would cost far more than the exam.
At Cathedral, students receive a 4.5 grade point value for an A earned in an AP course in recognition of both the quality and quantity of work required.
The following AP classes are available at Cathedral:
- AP Calculus
- AP American Literature Writing
- AP Biology
- AP Physics
- AP Psychology
Students who register for an AP course will be charged a course fee of $80.00, which includes the cost of the exam. With the approval of the Principal and Instructor, a student can elect not to take the exam, but the fee is not refundable. Scholarships would be provided where there is financial need.
